AT AMERICA’S PREMIER COMEDY NIGHTCLUB

Stand-Up Competition to Take Place March 2, 9, 16, 23 and 30;
Champion to be Crowned on March 30 at Carolines on Broadway

New York, NY – Taking a page from the NCAA College Basketball Tournament’s “March Madness,” famed comedy venue Carolines on Broadway will present its first annual “Carolines Final Four,” a five-round comedy competition in which 64 comedians will go head to head with the audience deciding who advances to the next round and who will be crowned the tournament champion.  Hosted by comedian Josh Spear, “Carolines Final Four” events will take place on March 2, 9, 16, 23 and on March 30.  Tip-off for all events is at 9:30 p.m., at 1626 Broadway, between 49th and 50th Streets, in New York City.

Tickets for all of the “Carolines Final Four” shows are $16.50 per person, plus a two-beverage minimum.  Tickets can be purchased online by visiting the Carolines website, at www.carolines.com.  Reservations can be made by calling the Carolines Box Office at 212.757.4100.

64 of New York’s best comedians who passed an open call audition will be randomly pitted against one another in a series of one-on-one competitions.  The first round of “Carolines Final Four” will take place on March 2 when all of the 64 competitors will each perform one minute of stand-up comedy. 32 comedians will advance to the second round – on March 9 – and each perform two minutes of stand-up.  The third round – taking place on March 16 – will feature the “Sweet Sixteen” and fourth round – on March 23 – the “Elite Eight” who will each perform three minutes of stand-up, with the “Final Four” advancing into the fifth and final round.  “The Final Four” comedians will square off on March 30, with each performing seven minutes of stand-up.  The last two advancing comedians will then square off with each perform ten minutes of stand-up, with the eventual winner being crowned.

“We’re thrilled to launch this exciting new event and are confident that it will generate the same kind of thrills and cheers on the comedy stage as the men’s college basketball tournament does on the basketball court,” said Louis Faranda, talent producer for Carolines on Broadway and the New York Comedy Festival and the creator of “Carolines Final Four.”  “We’re confident that the ‘Carolines Final Four’ will quickly grow into one of the city’s premier annual comedy events.”

The champion will receive a cash prize and will also get to perform with a headlining comedian on a weekend at Carolines on Broadway.  The three runner-up comedians will also receive a prize.

New York Magazine names new TKTS Booth "Building of the Decade"

"Ladies and gentlemen, take your seats; the show has already begun. Fire up your cell phones and let someone know where you are: on a set of glowing glass bleachers, with a front-and-center view of Times Square. Directly in front, the statue of Father Duffy stands with his back to the audience, facing the proscenium like the stage manager in Our Town. Dusk blazes among the twinkling marquees and the palisade of glaring signs. You’re part of the razzmatazz, too, members of the ensemble perched on a glossy scarlet staircase to nowhere. The little raked red piazza slung over the shoulders of the new TKTS booth is a work of exuberant uselessness and brilliant urbanism. At once humble and flashy, it distills the theatrical urge that electrified architecture in the last decade."  Read Full Article >>

Times Square Busker featured on German TV

Contortionist Jared Rydelek, a popular street perform and member of Times Square's Best of the Buskers program, was recently featured on a German news program viewable here. Best of the Buskers will return with the warm weather in Spring 2010!

During the interview, former office worker Rydelek describes himself as the happiest unemployed person in the world. After losing his job with a telecom company, he embraked on a fruitless job search and ultimately decided to go to circus school. By being flexible, not only with his ideas, but also with his body, he earns more than he did as an office worker. His next goal is to learn how to do a sword swallowing act, but he must first overcome his fear of gagging!

NEW YORK CITY NIGHTSEEING

The Illuminating Engineering Society presents the New York NIGHTSEEING Map - representative of many noteworthy lighting design projects viewable by the public in New York City. Guidebooks to New York City dutifully recount the names of buildings, the details of structural engineering feats, and the intricacies of construction materials.

While it may not be unusual for a tourist to point to a notable skyline tower and evoke the architect, how many can supply the name of the lighting designer responsible for bringing that building to light? This map showcases NYC’s illuminated buildings and the lighting designers responsible, from architectural masterpieces to the cutting edge, hip and trendy...at night!
