A recent “top ten” ranking compiled by ForbesTraveler.com declared New York City’s famed Times Square the nation’s most visited tourist destination.

The survey cited census data collected from the 2008 calendar year, during which the Big Apple experienced an increase in tourist traffic, despite the nationwide economic recession. In 2008, New York City welcomed 47 million travelers, who collectively generated $30 billion in total visitor spending.

“It’s official – Times Square truly is the Crossroads of the World,” said Times Square Alliance President Tim Tompkins, “This neighborhood offers a unique combination of creativity, energy and edge that attracts visitors from across the globe, and have made it an icon for entertainment, culture and urban life for over a century.”

Other top tourist destinations featured in the ranking include: the Las Vegas Strip; the National Mall and Memorial Parks in Washington, D.C.; Faneuil Hall Marketplace in Boston; Disney World's Magic Kingdom in Lake Buena Vista, Florida; Disneyland Park in California; San Francisco’s Fisherman's Wharf and the Golden Gate National Recreation Area; Niagara Falls; the Great Smoky Mountains National Park; and Chicago’s Navy Pier.
